Allow me to tell you my story. As a child, I never enjoyed reading. I struggled with a short attention span, and it took me a long time to learn the skills that seemed to come easily to my peers. Because of this, I was placed in special classes that never seemed to help me catch up, despite the efforts of my amazing teachers. My parents were told not to except too much from me. It didn't seem as if I had much of an academic future.
That all changed in 2008, when I was twelve years old, after my mom took me to see a little movie called Twilight. Something about that movie made me want to do something I had never done before--willingly read a book. The next day I picked up my mom's copy of Twilight. It was a struggle, but for the first time I was determined to continue, no matter how long it took. After reading all four books, the world of reading opened up to me and I was hooked. Before long I was removed from my special classes, and even achieved my first A in English. By the time I graduated high school, I was an avid bookworm who earned a full academic scholarship to my dream college.
I can't imagine where I would be if one book hadn't changed my life as a young teenager. I am passionate about storytelling, but I am even more passionate about helping young readers achieve their potential by falling in love with stories.
